Which changes deserve an examination?
A sore, red or white patch, lump, numbness, or difficulty chewing or swallowing that lasts more than two weeks deserves an examination. These changes have multiple possible causes; they do not establish a cancer diagnosis.
Mouth, tongue, lips and throat
Cancer can affect different tissues in the mouth and throat. Mention a persistent neck lump as well. A dentist or doctor can examine the area and arrange an appropriate referral.
Examination, biopsy and diagnosis
An examination may include looking at and feeling the tissues. A recommended biopsy allows a tissue sample to be analysed. A visual screening alone cannot confirm or exclude every cancer.
Treatment and recovery
If cancer is diagnosed, the specialist team explains the site, extent and options. Ask about effects on speech, swallowing, teeth and nutrition, and support during recovery.
